How long have you been playing the piano for? What age did you begin?
I’ve been playing the piano for over 14 years since I was five. My first concert was shortly afterwards when I was picked to play for the Kiwanis Stars of the Festival at the Jubilee Auditorium less than a year later. I had found my calling!
What is the one most important piece of advice you would give to a young child just starting out?
To any child starting out with something in the arts, you have to feel a true and personal connection to what you are doing. I’ve met dozens of people who’ve talked about being put in some artistic field by their parents and hating it, and I don’t doubt it. If there is not that love or desire to do what you are doing, there’s really no point. To become a master of anything takes tremendous discipline and effort, and it’s not something that happens overnight. Without that passion for your art, it is a loveless endeavor. And without love, there is nothing.
Who are some of your musical or non-musical influences?
I take inspiration from all creators who have dedicated their lives to their art & have done everything they can to elevate it to its highest level. Obviously all the old masters such as Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Debussy etc. as well as some contemporary musicians such as William Joseph, David Foster, St. Vincent, Florence Welch, Whitney Houston, Sevdaliza… so, so many. The ability to authentically express the inner workings of the heart and soul through music is something I admire about all these artists so deeply, and what I strive to achieve with my own music.
Do you have a personal favourite piece that you enjoy playing?
My current favourite piece is Un Sospiro by Franz Listz, although my all time favorite to play is Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto, but I need an full orchestra to play that one properly!
When you’re not playing piano…what do you like to do for fun?
I’ve been an actor since a young age as well and have been very lucky to have many amazing opportunities; I adore being on set and playing different characters. I’m very much into writing as well, both stories and poetry; I’m hoping to have a finished short story collection by the end of 2019. And of course anything to do with nature is a big yes from me.
What would be your ultimate goal when it comes to your piano playing?
I want to have a bigger, more global platform to share and create music with other artists. I truly believe that music is one of the most powerful and healing forces we have in this world, and I think we could all use a little healing right now. What better way than with a bit of music?
