Our New Icon Cover Star Jordan Gooden

In our work with Jordan over the past year, we have developed a deep appreciation for the way he thinks about art and his approach to acting. What we have seen from Jordan is that he takes his time; he is all about the details when it comes to his craft. It is through his creative process he teaches these details to other people. He truly puts all of his heart and energy into each project he is a part of. Jordan has gained the recognition of political leaders, celebrities and curators across the world. In 2013 Jordan received the World Heritage Award from the People’s Republic of China for his visual efforts and participation in the 2013 Zhangjiajie International Countries Music Festival. 2015 marked the year that Jordan was nominated out of 500,000 photographers, for not only one but two Global Exposure Awards in Photography. This was followed by an exclusively curated exhibition of his nominated visual series "The Paris Perspective" in the Louvre Museum in Paris. This award winning photographer, cinematographer, director and creative producer is organized, smart, and introspective. Make sure to watch our exclusive video interview, where you can observe his intelligence and grace as we discuss Jordan’s rise in the entertainment industry.

We have seen first-hand the affect that Jordan has on others when absorbed in his artistic state. Jordan carries himself with a charismatic confidence that paints every interaction with an aura of grand significance. Jordan’s contagious positive energy also effortlessly draws people to him; he is a man you want to meet and feel compelled to talk to.

Jordan is typically one to shy away from self-promotion, but after many attempts we have convinced him to share his story with our readers. We are so honored to have this brilliant young talent grace our 3rd issue.

Jordan most recently was a lead character in Sex Lies and Murder (season 1), now available for viewing on Crave TV, Amazon Prime, ReelzTV and TV Guide by Calgary's Pyramid Productions Directed by Geordy Day.

Watch Jordan's four interview videos below, which will teach you everything you need to know about keeping strong in the Canadian world of entertainment!

Q and A With Jordan Gooden by Blaine Schlechter and I'm Here With

Canadian Icon Jordan Gooden

Thanks for taking the time to chat with me today. I’ve had the chance to see some of your work and you’re definitely a very creative person and a very busy person. You work in photography, video, multi-media; a little bit of everything. For those not familiar with your work, tell them in a nutshell how you would describe it?

When I first started taking photos I didn’t really have an idea what I was doing, yet to me I felt as if I was channeling something inside of me that needed to be released. Creation in any form has always been a passion of mine. The feeling of being able to become and create anything at any time, the joy and happiness I bring to people's lives fuels my desire to be free through self-expression. Art is my form of camouflage as it is just as equally my armour. I had no real direction in my earlier years within creating. Slowly I began to hone in on what it was I was creating within this city. The people I create with find it really interesting, because my photos are not planned, 95% of my portfolio has never been planned out on paper or pre-inspired. Everything’s been created in the moment. Through my self-taught lighting techniques, and dynamic range of color and vibrancy I transcend the experience of being photographed into an experience containing far deeper depths of self-exploration. Throughout my years I’ve acquired lighting and different types of equipment and lenses to achieve a certain type of look.

What is it that I do? Well that is something I'm realizing more and more each day. I know now that I have the ability to feel people's emotional states to such a degree I am able to translate them into visual beauty. Transcending the mask most people wear to hide true self, I pull off the mask and bring out the vastness that comes from vulnerability and transparency. At times my creative process isn't something that I am in control of. It's a feeling: I feel very sensitive to energies and energetic vibrations emitted off of people and through this I’m able to define them visually. So I think that would sum up what I do – I visually define emotion or emotional states so to speak. That’s why every photo in my portfolio is completely different from the next. Everyone’s on their own journey (myself included) and I seem to be able to define them in that moment together and it’s quite nice.

I'm Here With recognizes Jordan Gooden as a Canadian Icon, who is influencing and supporting the rising entertainment stars of tomorrow. You can see Jordan most recently in Sex Lies and Murder and Jann on CTV.

The interview we did with Jordan was a little different for us! He helped us to incorporate the video for this interview, one of the many things he taught us to do. The song playing in the background is one of his own creation, and the carefully selected purple backdrop sets an appropriately regal tone for the rise of this impressive Canadian-Jamaican talent.

In our interview, the handsome photographer advises readers to love yourself, be authentic, work with people who resonate with you and be positive. Watch Jordan’s interview now to learn how his authentic spirit guides his success..

Understanding who is behind the art , ICON JORDAN GOODEN

I’m going to go back and look at your work again and I will definitely be seeing them all in a whole new light.

I add a lot of original quotes and titles to my posts to help the viewer resonate a little more clearly with the emotional intent of the photo.  It just kind of guides people through what they are looking at, because some people could misinterpret perceived images. I’ve never actually communicated verbally or publicly to the world my creative process.  Not even to the people I’m creating with. Nobody actually knows the details behind how or why and I'm Here With Magazine has given me the opportunity to tell my story to the world and what it is I’m doing in my career. It has stressed people out before, because they think that I’m holding these big secrets, there’s no secrets, it’s just a constant creative process I’m growing with. I’ve now found the words to communicate what it is I’m doing.

How did you decide to follow this creative career path, what led you to it?

It wasn’t so much a conscious decision to becoming an artist so much as it was me instinctually filling a need within self.  This need inside of me to become more of my authentic self. It was all a very intuitive process. The part that really launched me into expressing myself creatively was the ability to really just let go of ego and people’s perceptions of myself and just do it, for me.  The exact moment I got my first camera, I was 18 years old, sitting in my room playing a newly purchased video game console. At the time I was renting a little house in Brentwood, in Calgary, Alberta with some roommates. While playing I was filled with an urge to invest deeper into my future to live deeper and more authentically.  It was in that moment I got up out of bed, packed up the console and took the first steps towards a better future for myself. I had received a store credit and without thought or planning I found myself in the camera department of this store. Little did I know that these tiny past moments would change the direction of my life completely.

ICON JORDAN GOODEN, What We Have Learned From The Artist Who Is Supporting The Stars of Tomorrow, Be Yourself.

You shoot all types of pictures and video in all types of genres; do you have any personal favorite subjects or concepts that you like to shoot?

I love when people ask me if I have a personal favorite.  I do…and it’s everything I’ve ever created. As a whole it tells my story as well as the story of others and it’s a constant channel of evolution, so the whole thing is me and I love me, so I love everything.  There’s no specific project I’ve done and there’s no specific genre that I’m going to shoot in the future. I literally create in the moment so my opportunities of creation are completely endless; it’s infinite.   I can create at any moment within any moment and essentially that’s just my ability I’ve been mastering; this ability to be that kind of artist within all medians because I don’t like to rely on others, I’m quite independent. If I want to do some sound engineering for a video project, boom…I can do it;  I need photos…I can do it, I don’t need to wait, I can do it seamlessly and effectively in an efficient amount of time. I hammer out videos that take some three months just to conceptualize, let alone editing. So I really do blow myself away. I don’t have expectations because I’m literally creating the moment so I’m always pleased (laughs).

ICON JORDAN GOODEN, Under Stand Yourself

It sounds like a great show for those lucky enough to be invited to the private event. Hopefully it will turn into a public event in the future too.

Exactly. I think the intent would be for all of that to go nationwide and really hone in on something in that regard, because according to a lot people I have the look that’s very similar to his; we have the same moles on our cheeks, we have very similar characteristics in the way we move, and our facial expressions.  I only recently discovered Prince, to be honest, maybe a year before his death. I was not a fan and I didn’t know his music until around that time frame and since he passed it just catapulted with the compliments in people seeing me as that, so it’s interesting to see how everything is unfolding today.

Best of luck with the show. For anyone who is interested, they can find you through the regular social media channels; Instagram, Facebook and everything else to check you out and I encourage people to check it out and seek out your work because you’re definitely very talented.

My gratitude is strong, and I will forever be humbled.
