The irreplaceable (and far too young) Jann Arden accepts her induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at The JUNO Awards.

June 1, 2021 – This week, Canada’s public broadcaster and The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) are bringing Canada’s biggest celebration of music to audiences on all platforms with a special lineup of the best of Canadian music for this year’s virtual JUNO Week and Music Day on CBC leading up to the 50th annual JUNO Awards Broadcast.


From Harry Styles dropping in to Crown Lands' powerful call to action, here are five moments you missed from the first night of The JUNO Awards.

In advance of the Sunday’s broadcast, 37 JUNO Awards will be given out at the JUNO Opening Night Awards Presented by Music Canada on Friday, June 4th. Hosted by Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe, this virtual celebration will feature performances by nominees Ammoye, Kirk Diamond and TÖME, Crown Lands, Klô Pelgag, Lindsay Ell and MacKenzie Porter, TOBi and 2020/2021 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class group, MONOWHALES. Arnett rose to mainstream prominence in the role of Gob Bluth in 2003's Arrested Development, and has been successful as the voice of BoJack Horseman in BoJack Horseman, and as voice of the Lego Batman/Bruce Wayne. Arnett continues to work with Lego, as the host of the series Lego Masters, and is also finding success with his podcast with Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes, SmartLess.


Calgary's Phung made a splash with Canadian audiences as fan favourite "Kimchee" on the CBC comedy series Kim's Convenience in 2016, for which he has since won three Canadian Screen Awards.


Following the finale of Kim's earlier this year, Phung is currently working on a new series for CBC called Run the Burbs, where Phung plays a stay-at-home dad with an entrepreneur wife and two kids.Previously Phung told the Canadian Press, "In a lot of ways, I think it's a good spiritual continuation for Kim's."


"Not narratively a continuation, but it's a spiritual continuation in the sense that we get to see a diverse family living their best life, but now we get to see it in the suburbs."


This year's nominees for the Juno Awards Comedy Album of The Year include Nick Nemeroff, Derek Seguin, Shirley Gnome, Matt Wright and Jacob Samuel.

The 2021 JUNO Awards

CBC Music presents the biggest night in Canadian music, featuring appearances, award presentations and performances from groundbreaking Canadian artists like The Tragically Hip with Feist, Justin Bieber, Maestro Fresh Wes, Jann Arden and more.



The Tragically Hip is joined by Feist in a special live performance of "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken" at Toronto's Massey Hall. The band received the Humanitarian Award (presented by Music Canada) at The JUNO Awards this year.


In Concert is hosted by Paolo Pietropaolo, In Concert will feature 2021 classical winners and present the JUNO Classical Showcase recorded at the Glenn Gould studio.

The JUNO Jazz showcase

Hosted by Laila Biali, this JUNOS jazz session features nine legendary musicians nominated in the three jazz categories at the 2021 JUNO Awards. From traditional to vocal, from group to Latin, the showcase has all the jazz stylings covered.

Frequencies -Hosted by Errol Nazareth, Frequencies celebrates the world music album of the year nominees by spinning songs from nominated artists like Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra, Lengaïa Salsa Brava, Mazacote, Okan and Zal Sissokho.

Haviah Mighty joined Michie Mee, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, Maestro Fresh Wes, NAV, and DJ Starting From Scratch for a tribute to Canadian hip hop history at the 2021 Juno Awards.

The Reclaimed JUNO showcase

Connecting the generations and Indigenous nations across Turtle Island and beyond, this Reclaimed session features performances from this year's Indigenous JUNO Award nominees and the next wave in Native music. From Nunavut to Wiikwemkoong, Denendeh to Tkaronto, host Jarrett Martineau celebrates the sounds of Indigenous folk, roots, blues, powwow step and moccasin gaze.

The Intro was hosted by Saroja Coelho, this special JUNOS edition of The Intro showcases rising artists from across the country through interviews and live performances.


The Block JUNO showcase was hosted by Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe, The Block travels musically across genres. Using hip hop as a central talent, the show crosses many intersections within Black music from across the diaspora. For this special JUNOS edition, The Block celebrates Black musical achievement of the past, present and future with a selection of live performances from Michie Mee, Ammoye, Dijah SB and more.



Deep Dive on Jann Arden

The East Coast JUNO Hour

Hosted by Bill Roach, this is a celebration of East Coast JUNO winners from this year and years past.


JUNO Songwriters' Circle

Hosted by Jim Cuddy and featuring Carole Pope (Rough Trade), Deborah Cox, Dan Hill and Leah Fay and Peter Dreimanis from July Talk, CBC Music and the JUNO Awards' perennially popular Songwriters' Circle celebrates five decades of excellence in songwriting.


The JUNO Winners' Circle

Hosted by Odario Williams, this celebration of winners from the JUNO Opening Night Awards includes commentary and context from some of your favourite CBC Music hosts.

In addition to the Music Day on CBC lineup, funded by the Government of Canada, The JUNOS assembled Archival Revival Presented by TD, where each clip within the series lets viewers relive the most iconic JUNOS moments. Memories include Quincy Jones inducting David Foster into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Avril Lavigne’s first-ever performance on the JUNOS stage, Tina Turner bringing out Bryan Adams for ‘’It’s Only Love’’ and Catherine O’Hara meeting Corey Hart. Now with over 4 million video views across the series, these treasured moments allow viewers the opportunity to relive nostalgic music moments in Canadian history.


CARAS has also launched a digital content series rising Presented by TD and made possible with the support of Ontario Creates, that showcases artists’ creative process and the stories behind their art with highly produced documentary features. The project launched in November 2018 to bring artists new audiences and increase their exposure and notoriety within the industry. Streaming on the JUNO Awards’ Facebook and YouTube channels the episodes include Once A Tree,  Night Lovell, Ali Gatie, Amaal , CARYS and Fateh.  Total video views across the series are now at over 1.3 Million.
